About the Year 6 spelling test

The spelling test is Paper 2 of the KS2 grammar, punctuation and spelling SATs. The teacher reads 20 sentences aloud, each with a word missing, and the child writes the missing word. Each correct spelling is worth 1 mark.

Which words should Year 6 know?

The national curriculum has two statutory word lists: 100 words for Years 3 and 4, and 100 words for Years 5 and 6. Words like accommodate, necessary, rhythm and yacht are on them. You can see all 200 statutory spelling words on one page, and search or print them.

How the practice works

Practice here uses Look, Cover, Write, Check. You see the word in a sentence, hide it, then write it from memory. Words you get wrong come back more often, and a word won't repeat until at least 50 others have been practised.

Tips for tricky words
