About the KS2 grammar, punctuation and spelling test
The Year 6 grammar, punctuation and spelling test (often called SPaG or GPS) has two parts. Paper 1 is grammar and punctuation: 50 questions worth 50 marks, done in 45 minutes. Paper 2 is a spelling test of 20 words, read aloud by the teacher.
What comes up most
From the last five real papers:
- Word classes are the biggest topic by far: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, determiners, pronouns and conjunctions. There are 10 to 13 questions on them every year.
- Punctuation: commas most of all, then colons, semi-colons, apostrophes, dashes, brackets, hyphens and inverted commas.
- Clauses: main clauses, subordinate clauses and relative clauses.
- Sentence types: statements, questions, commands and exclamations.
- Standard English, verb tenses, prefixes and suffixes, synonyms and antonyms.
How the questions are asked
Most answers aren't written out. About a third of the questions are "tick one", and about half ask you to circle, underline or insert something on the page. The practice above uses the same formats: tick-one options, clicking the right word in a sentence, and typed answers.
Tip: check the word's job, not the word
The same word can belong to different word classes. In "I'll see you after lunch", after is a preposition. In "After we had eaten, we played", it is a conjunction. Always look at what the word is doing in that sentence.
